Nelson, Canada’s leading education and content provider, will launch a webinar series that will focus on teaching and learning about the legacy of Residential Schools. Beginning on October 4, 2022, Nelson will host a new series titled, “Tracking the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and Legacy of Residential Schools.” The series, led by Niigaan Sinclar, one of Canada’s leading voices on Truth and Reconciliation, will explore the process of reconciliation by deepening educators’ understanding of Indigenous legacy, by deepening understanding of child welfare, education, language and culture, health, and justice.

“Nelson is committed to our Indigenous Education mission statement and collaborating with Indigenous communities to create authentic, accurate First Nations, Métis, and Inuit resources,” says Linda Isaac, member of Alderville First Nation and National Director of Education for Reconciliation, Equity, and Inclusion at Nelson. “We understand our responsibility to not only tell the truth about Residential Schools in classrooms, but to change the narrative in the Canadian education landscape. We are proud to provide a webinar series that will demonstrate how Indigenous education can be incorporated in all levels of learning with a focus on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action. We are honoured to work in partnership with Niigaan Sinclair on this journey.”

“The first forty-two Calls to Action of the TRC call upon Canada to engage and take action on the Residential Schools’ legacy, specifically in education,” said Niigaan Sinclair. “We must find new ways to develop educational resources that tell the whole truth about the Residential School System. I admire Nelson’s continued commitment to working with Indigenous communities on bringing this understanding to Canadian teachers. We are devoted to equipping the school community with this knowledge and are excited to see how this webinar series will drive meaningful conversations in classrooms across the country.”

The sessions will take place live online on the following dates:

  • October 4, 2022
  • October 18, 2022
  • November 15, 2022
