For over a century, Nelson has worked in partnership with Canadian educators to develop quality resources tied to curricula, to meet provincial learning expectations. We stand with racialized communities in the movement against systemic oppression. As an educational company, that prides itself on educating the life long learner, we have a social responsibility to elevate the voices of those that need to be heard.
There is much to be done and we stay committed in continuing to work with educators and key stakeholder communities to enable students of all backgrounds to see themselves reflected with accuracy and respect in authentic learning resources.
Over the past three years, we have taken steps to further reflect on our resource development strategy. In light of the Truth and Reconciliation’s Calls to Action, our product teams have reinvigorated their processes to ensure our content is developed through meaningful collaboration with the communities we serve.
As part of this commitment, we formed two advisory circles. The first was formed in 2017 to support Indigenous Education and the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. In May of 2020, as the Black Lives Matter movement gained momentum, we listened to the Black educator community, creating a Black Excellence Advisory Circle. This group is comprised of Black Canadian classroom educators and educational leaders that have started to help us shape and create new educational content that addresses Black History in Canada, anti-black racism, and critical consciousness. As educational publishing continues to evolve, new and diverse content is and will continue to be released regularly in Nelson’s digital learning ecosystem, Edwin.
Nelson is committed to developing culturally responsive teaching and learning resources, and we will continue to work with students, educators and key stakeholders to help create more inclusive classrooms across Canada.
